Down Load the Free Version of "Key Reader"

Down load Key Reader and a few sample keys, this DOS program will allow you to read botanical keys from your desktop or from a laptop in the field. It is packaged as a self-extracting zip file. So run it by double clicking on the program once you download it. It will extract the DOS program, a read me file and several sample keys.

The self-extracting zip file contains the documentation on "Key Reader". This documentation will explain how to use the program and how to type in and create your own botanical keys that you can take to the field with you.

"Key Reader" is not much good without some keys. There are several botanical keys archived in the self-extracting zip file when you download. These are samples of keys that "Key Reader" can read. These are text files and they should be placed into the same directory as the command line program "Key Reader". Do not open or alter the format of these text files without reading the read me file first.

One key is for native rhododendrons in the Appalachian and piedmont region of the United States. It is typed in from the book Vascular Plants of The Carolinas.

Another key is a very good trillium key that was written by Tom Patrick. It covers the trilliums for the United States.

Last there is a very good crataegus key written by Ron Lance that is one of the few attempts at this complex genus. It covers most of the crataegus of the United States.
